Vacuum Kiln
Time and Quality
Kiln drying is an essential process for quickly and evenly drying wood as well as eliminating wood-borne pests. Our vacuum kiln precisely controls environmental conditions, resulting in thoroughly dried wood with fewer defects compared to traditional methods. By utilizing vacuum-kiln drying, we accelerate the drying process through increased moisture evaporation without increased temperature. This approach minimizes stress on the wood, reducing issues such as cracking, warping, and color fading while drying 3-5 times faster than conventional methods.
Our iDry kiln accommodates up to 4000 board feet and/or a stickered lumber pile of up to 16.5ft long, 60 inches wide and 65inches tall.
Air Drying Wood
We recommend air drying the wood initially to remove unbound or "free" water, as this process can be relatively quick and is cost-effective. While some believe this step reduces stress on the wood, we primarily emphasize its role in saving kiln time and costs.
For recently milled slabs, we advise allowing 3-6 months of air drying to achieve optimal results and minimize costs before kiln loading. Wood above 30% moisture content can be dried in the kiln, but at an increased cost.
During winter months, air drying slows significantly; therefore, we can store some wood onsite in a sealed building until it’s ready for the kiln.
